Zermatt is one of the world’s most picturesque Alpine towns, known for its scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. There is no better way to explore the Swiss Alps! So, put on your hiking boots and traverse the stunning trails around this charming town. But what makes the experience even more magical is hiking below the famed Matterhorn towering above you. Let us take you on a journey to experience hiking below this pyramid-shaped colossus.

Zermatt Hiking Trails are Breathtaking

Zermatt has some of the most scenic hiking routes in the world. The trails are diverse and perfect for all types of hikers, from beginners to experienced. Many of them offer panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. The Matterhorn, that ever-present slab of rock that, for so many years, graced the Toblerone chocolate boxes, is always just a glimpse away and hard to miss from any vantage point. The trails offer a chance to see the flora and fauna of the region in their natural habitat. The hiking trails are well maintained, and you can choose from a variety of hikes of varying lengths and difficulties. Altitude? Unlike the Rockies or Wasatch mountains in America that start at 5,000 feet or higher, most mountain ranges in Europe begin at 1,000 feet or less. This makes them much more accessible to all hikers.

Keep on reading to discover some of our favorite trails for hiking in Zermatt! You can also join us on our guided trip this fall to explore the best that the Swiss Alps have to offer.

The Matterhorn is Iconic and Unmistakable

The Matterhorn is undoubtedly the most famous mountain in the Swiss Alps and one of the most iconic peaks in the world. It stands tall at 14,690 feet above sea level and dominates the Zermatt skyline. Nearly every home in Zermatt is designed and built so that at least one window has a view of “nature’s pyramid.” Hiking in Zermatt below the Matterhorn is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You’ll explore a plethora of grazing farmland, pristine mountain lakes and rock outcroppings. The view of the Matterhorn from the trails, or any of the many mountain restaurant huts is simply breathtaking. Close your eyes and picture yourself relaxing in the sun, with a nice Raclette, or Rösti, and a glass of Fondant while staring at the Matterhorn. The sheer size and beauty of this rock is mesmerizing.

Here’s an interesting thought. Zermatt would never have become famous if Mother Earth didn’t blast her up facing towards Switzerland. The Matterhorn from the Italian side in Cervinia looks like just another mountain peak, but nothing special. I can assure you; the Swiss got the better deal when this famous mountain was formed millions of years ago.

Hiking in the Swiss Alps

Hiking is a challenging activity, especially in the high mountains. In true Swiss fashion, Zermatt takes their skiing and hiking seriously. The trails are well marked, and information boards are placed along the way with useful tips. The mountain rescue service is always on standby, and we often use a guide if the trail we want to take is new. We check the weather multiple times a day and know the location of most mountain huts where we can stop in for hydration and a nice meal. We also utilize the ultra-modern cableways in and around Zermatt to access or come back to town from a day of hiking. To the Swiss, it’s all about the experience.

Kulkea

Our sponsor on this trip is the travel and lifestyle company, Kulkea. We use their travel and hydration packs exclusively on our trips. Whether it’s ski, bike, hike or just travel, Kulkea has you covered with the highest quality and most functional packs on the market. For hiking in Zermatt, we’re featuring the OTRmost Hydration Backpack. It’s designed to be fast and feather light, yet in it for the long haul.  A mighty daypack, with 15L of storage space, external access for extra layers and poles, best-in-class hydration technology, rain cover and purpose designed pockets for all of your essential items.

Our Favorite Hiking Trails

Zermatt offers an array of hiking trails suitable for all levels of hikers. The trails vary from easy walks to challenging treks, giving something for everyone. A few more of the most popular hiking trails in Zermatt are the Gornergrat to Riffelberg trail, the Five Lakes Walk, and the Monte Rosa Hiking Trail.

Explore the Gorner Gorge

The Gorner Gorge, located just below the Furri lift station, is a natural wonder you cannot miss when hiking in Zermatt. This narrow canyon is filled with waterfalls, deep pools, and rock formations that have been carved by the rushing water for millions of years. The gorge is accessible via a wooden walkway, which makes for an easy hike, and you can explore it in about an hour.

Discover the Matterhorn Glacier Trail

This easy hike is perfect for those who want to experience the beauty of the Matterhorn without taking on a challenging trek. The Matterhorn Glacier Trail is a 2.5-kilometer hike that takes you on a gentle path through the heart of the glacier. You’ll walk on a unique, snow-covered landscape and witness stunning views of the surrounding Swiss Alps.

Trek the Scenic Sunnegga Trail

The Sunnegga Trail is an easy, two-hour hike that leads you through lush meadows and beautiful forests with a stunning backdrop of the Matterhorn. The trail begins at Sunnegga, which is easily accessible via the funicular from Zermatt village. The trail ends at the charming village of Zmutt, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of Swiss chocolate cake.

Discover the Furi-Höhenweg Trail

The Furi-Höhenweg Trail is a moderate hike that takes you through forests, meadows, and alpine terrain with fantastic views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. The trail starts at top of the Furi lift and ends at the picturesque hamlet of Schwarzsee. On the way down, we always stop at our favorite restaurant, the Zum Zee, for some incredible Swiss delicacies. The Zum Zee is nestled below the Matterhorn in 400 year-old grazing huts.

Experience Swiss Culture

Hiking in the Zermatt is a great way to experience and learn more about Swiss culture. On the trails, you’ll encounter traditional Alpine huts, centuries old mountain huts, wildflowers, and meet the local animals like goats, sheep, and cows. In the quaint village of Zermatt life surrounds a rich cultural heritage that dates back to the 13th century. Known for its stunning beauty, the town has managed to maintain its traditional architecture while embracing a modern and welcoming atmosphere. Walking along the charming streets, visitors can appreciate the alpine chalets and old-world storefronts that tell the story of the town’s history. Beyond the architecture, Zermatt is a hub for Swiss culture. Numerous traditional festivals and events throughout the year showcase the region’s music, crafts, and culinary traditions. With this vibrant culture and stunning location, Zermatt is a unique destination that offers an unforgettable vacation experience.
