Most Americans have heard of Lake Como, Italy. Less than 150 kilometers to the east is Como’s sister, Lake Garda, the largest of Italy’s northern lakes. Its crystal-clear waters have been long sought after by poets, politicians, divas and dictators. Located east of Milan and west of Venice, this precious jewel is home to some of the best mountain biking, watersports and climbing in Italy.
At the northern end of Lake Garda, the charming Riva del Garda is nestled between the mountains and the water, with medieval streets and sunny waterside promenades. This region of Lake Garda is considered a mecca for mountain bike riders with over 1,000 kilometers of designated riding trails. Riva’s ancient town center features a Venetian watchtower and the centuries-old Rocca del Riva, a castle built between the 12th and 15th centuries.
Accommodations for the week are at the Villa Tempesta – a charming and quiet boutique hotel located on a rocky outcrop with magnificent views of Lake Garda, just a few kilometers from the enchanting town of Torbole. The Villa Tempesta has direct access to the lake shore, including a private swimming cove – for a refreshing dip after a long day on the trails. It is an oasis of relaxation and wellbeing
At Villa Tempesta, every day begins with a delicious breakfast on their splendid panoramic terrace. The buffet is rich with regional products: fruits, freshly baked bread, fragrant croissants, yoghurt from their own production, and muesli, as well a delicious selection of cheeses and cold cuts. Hearty meals come on request from the kitchen. No rides begin on an empty stomach!
After a great day on the bike, we can explore the lakefront, visiting medieval towns and Venetian castles, discovering priceless artwork and architecture. For those who love the water, the beach of Torbole is a favorite wind surfing and sailing destination.
