Tamara McKinney is the first American woman to win the overall World Cup in alpine skiing. Tamara and both Phil & Steve Mahre broke trail on the International ski circuit for future champions like Picabo Street, Julia Mancuso, Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Bodie Miller and Daron Rahlves. The youngest of 8 McKinney children, 4 of whom were members of the US Ski Team, Tamara followed their lead to the top of the sport as a 14 year member of the U.S. Ski Team. During her 13 years competing on the World Cup circuit, Tamara reigned as the best American female in the world from 1981-1989, competing in 3 Olympic Games (1980, 1984, 1988) and 5 World Championship Teams for the United States. During her illustrious career, Tamara accumulated 18 individual World Cup wins, 45 podiums, (Including podium finishes in all events, slalom, GS, Super G, downhill & combined), racked up a whopping 99 top 10 world cup finishes, 10 US National Championship titles, 2 New Zealand National Championship titles & an Argentine National Championship title. Tamara also won 2 individual World Cup Giant Slalom season titles and 1 individual World Cup Slalom title, then rounding out her career with 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal in the World Championships.

After a serious accident that caused her left tibial plateau compressed & fractured in 10 places, Tamara had one more ski racing comeback competing in the International “Tournament of Champions” circuit. Nationally televised, Tamara beat the men’s overall champion Franz Weber in an unprecedented male – female final, dual format, to become World Champion again! Inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame at 21 years of age, Tamara McKinney also joined legends of the alpine skiing sport in recent years by being inducted into the International Ski Hall of Fame. Still passionate about skiing, Tamara continues to coach young ski racers in her home area of Lake Tahoe and her daughter, Francesca, is an NCAA All American skier at University of Vermont shares a love of the sport.
